A Palm Springs original
The Orchid House was built in 1971 by Howard Lapham, a hands-on architectural designer who helped shape Palm Springs during its mid-century growth.
Lapham arrived in the desert in 1954 and worked across the whole building process as a carpenter, draftsman, contractor, land planner, and designer. His portfolio moved easily from private homes to hotels, shops, social landmarks, and civic spaces.
His 1955 Desert Star gathered resort bungalows around a shared pool, an early expression of the indoor-outdoor life that still makes Palm Springs irresistible. The city designated it a Class 1 Historic Site in 2016.
